چکیده

The discovery of transiting extrasolar planets has enabled us a number of interesting stduies. Transit photometry reveals the radius and the orbital inclination of transiting planets, and thereby we can learn the true mass and the density of respective planets by the combined information of radial velocity measurements. In addition, follow-up observations of transiting planets such as secondary eclipse, transit timing variations, transmission spectroscopy, and the RossiterMcLaughlin effect provide us information of their dayside temperature, unseen bodies in systems, planetary atmospheres, and obliquity of planetary orbits. Such observational information, which will provide us a greater understanding of extrasolar planets, is available only for transiting planets. Here I briefly summarize what we can learn from transiting planets and introduce previous studies.

The color signature of the transit of HD 209458: Discrepancies between stellar atmospheric models and observations

Exoplanetary transits produce a double-horned color signature that is distinct from both binaries and blends and can thus be used to separate exoplanets from false positives in transit searches. Color photometry with precision sufficient to detect this signal in transits of HD 209458 is available in the literature. Analysis of these observations reveals that, while the signature does exhibit th...

Periastron Precession Measurements in Transiting Extrasolar Planetary Systems at the Level of General Relativity

Transiting exoplanetary systems are surpassingly important among the planetary systems since they provide the widest spectrum of information for both the planet and the host star. If a transiting planet is on an eccentric orbit, the duration of transits TD is sensitive to the orientation of the orbital ellipse relative to the line of sight. The precession of the orbit results in a systematic va...

Exoplanets and the Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect

A transiting planet eclipses part of the rotating stellar surface, thereby producing an anomalous Doppler shift of the stellar spectrum. Here I review how this “Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect” can be used to characterize exoplanetary systems. In particular, one can measure the angle on the sky between the orbital axis and the stellar rotation axis. This may help to discriminate among migration theo...

A Photometric Diagnostic to Aid in the Identification of Transiting Extra-Solar Planets

One of the obstacles in the search for exoplanets via transits is the large number of candidates that must be followed up, few of which ultimately prove to be exoplanets. Any method that could make this process more efficient by somehow identifying the best candidates and eliminating the worst would therefore be very useful. Seager & Mallén-Ornelas (2003) demonstrated that it was possible to di...

Prospects for the Characterization and Confirmation of Transiting Exoplanets via the Rossiter-mclaughlin Effect

The Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect is the distortion of stellar spectral lines that occurs during eclipses or transits, due to stellar rotation. We assess the future prospects for using the RM effect to measure the alignment of planetary orbits with the spin axes of their parent stars, and to confirm exoplanetary transits. We compute the achievable accuracy for the parameters of interest, in g...
